Introduction

As The Concept, we aim to build innovative solutions that adapt to the current ethnography, their studied environment and our eco-system. As we strive to increase the ease of functionality for our customers, our passion driven concepts will save direct and in-direct costs as we re-introduce efficiency as well as sustainability into the market. Unfortunately from post-deregulation in 1978 to the innovation and technological era we live in today, there has not been much enforcement of innovation throughout aviation when it comes to everyday touch points and human interactions. Therefore we took this as an opportunity to look at operational touch points from the perspective of the key stakeholders of the aviation industry; The Airline, The Passenger & The Staff (Cabin Crew). Our first project is the 'NEOS In-flight Economy Tray'. The current economy tray has been in the market for almost 60 years without prolific change. In order to develop the tray it was at the early stage of design thinking where The Concept understood and decided in order to have the best possible product they would have to involve the key stakeholders behind the product; The Airlines, the passengers, the cabin crew and the flight catering operations. The NEOS tray since its early development stage has so far gone through 10 phases of prototyping involving different iterations which were required in relevance to functionality, weight-saving material, aesthetics and technological enforcement. The development stage of iteration involved testing multiple products in mock environments at leading legacy airline's facilities, pilots on-board live aircrafts and focus groups with cabin crew, key stakeholders and passengers within the aviation industry.

Reducing weight

A key component of the NEOS tray looks at reducing the over all weight of the current tray by up to 80%. This has been achieved using a unique co-developed material that not only has the weight-saving characteristics but also has great FST, chemical and physical component. These unique attributes are the fore-factors to how the NEOS In-Flight Economy Tray saves up to $6,000,000 US Dollars per contract per airline.

Technology

Re-inventing the in-flight economy tray after almost 6 decades allowed the team to introduce technology into a product that had been merely used as a single orientated product with a single objective of housing food for a passenger. The introduction of RFID technology allows for in-sync activity between the airline and flight catering operation, whilst it benchmarks opportunities for continual development. Integrating QR code technology for the very first time in this segment opens up a whole new range of dining enhancement possibilities for passengers, whilst creating a channel of data capturing and ancillary revenue streams for the airlines adopting this feature.

Using an eco-friendly material we are able to meet the goal of creating a sustainable product that can be mechanically recycled at the end of its life cycle and contributes to being made into a new tray whilst still holding its physical and mechanical properties.
